Women Film Pioneers
Monographs
As part of a new book series launched in conjunction with the
Women Film Pioneers Project, the University
of Illinois Press is looking for monographs focused
on a single figure or a single film in the history of women
film pioneers.
Each monograph will be written in a clear accessible
manner and will include a short biography, critical interpretation
of the work, bibliography, filmography, and other archival information.

guidelines are provided below
Monograph
Description:
- Short biography: situating the pioneer or film in relation
to the rest of the industry, society, and historical moment
- Critical interpretation: critical analysis of aesthetics
and structure of film(s)
- "Politique des femmes": consideration of what it means
to do a feminist history, examining approach employed
to analyze women as images, spectators, and instigators
during the silent era
- Bibliography

- Filmography: detail about format, running time, print
condition
- Documents: interviews, fan or trade magazine articles
- Archival dossier: illustrated essay on challenge of
doing still and moving picture research in international
archives, vicissitudes of early film credits, etc.
- Resources: guide to where and how to do archival research;
how to rent film, 16mm and 35mm, and where to buy VHS/DVD
copies

Monograph
Proposal Format:
We are looking for monographs on early women in
the international film industry or a single film produced, directed,
and/or written by one of these figures
Thank you for sending a 4-5 single-spaced page
proposal including the following to the editor at the University
of Illinois Press. Please read the full project description
above.
- Biography. Significance of the figure or film to the field
and in history. Short overview of life and review of scholarship
to date
- Critical apparatus. Explain which extant films are important
and the method(s) you will take in your critical essay
- Filmography/Archival. Short overview of archival research
plan including both film and print material. List film archives
with brief comments on print condition and feasibility of
preservation of one or more titles
- Documents. Suggestions for inclusion in monograph (interviews,
fan magazine articles, etc.)
