Application Procedures

Application materials, financial aid, and the University Bulletin must be obtained online:

Graduate School Online Application

A complete application, for which the postmark should be no later than December 15, (application must arrive at the Graduate School within fourteen days of the December 15 postmark), consists of: official transcripts, letters of recommendation, the statement of purpose, and aptitude test scores on the Graduate Record Examination. Information concerning the GRE may be obtained from college testing offices or by writing to the Educational Testing Service (ETS), Box 955, Princeton, NJ 98540. Students are advised that GRE exams in foreign languages may have application deadlines as early as September. ETS will suspend offering the GRE through the computer based program in China, Taiwan, and Korea as of October 1, 2002 and all tests administered in those countries after that date will be by paper.

Other Requirements

The submission of a writing sample (nonreturnable, limited to fewer than 15 pages) is required. It should be a photocopy of an essay (nonfiction), preferably a critical or scholarly essay submitted as an academic requirement in a course in literature. Writing sample should be sent directly to the Literature Program at: Duke University Literature Program, Box 90670 Science Building, 124 Campus Drive, Durham, NC 27708.                                                                                     

                                                                                            

Cost and Financial Aid

For information on tuition and fees, see the current University Bulletin. Financial support is available in various forms and the program will offer competitive stipends to highly qualified students. Applicants will be eligible for the University's special awards such as the James B. Duke Fellowship, the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Fellowship, Endowment Fellowships, and International Fellowships. Teaching assistantships, dissertation travel awards, summer awards, and travel support for students delivering papers at conferences are also available.
